Overview

Porch and lanai screening helps create a more comfortable transition between the home and yard.

Porch and lanai screening for front and back of the home

A screened porch or lanai is one of the most used spaces in a Florida home, often more than the living room itself during the mild months. Screening an open porch keeps insects, pollen and windblown debris out while letting air move freely through the space, so it stays comfortable to sit in through most of the year rather than only on the handful of bug-free evenings an open porch allows.

If your front porch or back lanai currently sits open, common reasons homeowners decide to screen it include wanting a bug-free spot for morning coffee or evening relaxing, needing a safer contained space for pets or young kids to play outside without full supervision at the yard's edge, or simply wanting to stop sweeping leaves and pollen off the furniture after every windy day. An existing lanai with tired, sagging or torn screen that no longer keeps bugs out is also a common reason to call.

Front porches, back porches and second-floor balconies each have their own layout challenges. We measure every opening on site, look at how the existing posts, beams and railings are arranged, and plan the framing and screen placement so the finished porch looks tidy and proportioned to the house rather than like an obvious add-on. Materials and screen type are matched to the style of the home where possible.

Access matters as much as the screen itself. We discuss where you want doors located, whether you need a wider opening for moving furniture or a grill through, and how the screen should meet existing steps, railings or columns without leaving awkward gaps. Everything we agree to on site, including panel layout and door placement, is written into the estimate before any work begins.

Mesh options for porch and lanai screening are generally the same as for pool cages and screen rooms: standard weight for shaded or protected porches, heavier or tighter weave for porches more exposed to sun, wind or insects. We explain which option suits your specific porch based on its orientation and exposure during the estimate visit.

Florida weather affects porch screening in a few practical ways. South- and west-facing porches see more direct sun and UV exposure, which shortens the life of standard mesh somewhat compared to a shaded northern exposure, and porches exposed to open yards or fields tend to see more wind load during storms. We account for orientation and exposure when recommending a mesh option and when planning how the frame is secured.

On estimate day, a technician measures each opening to be screened, checks the condition of the existing posts and beams the frame will attach to, and discusses door placement and mesh options with you before writing up the proposal. Estimates are free after the on-site measure, and the written scope covers materials, layout and price before work is scheduled.

If your porch or lanai is already screened but the mesh is faded, torn or sagging, we can rescreen it using the same process we use for pool cage rescreening, keeping the existing frame in place where it is still sound and only replacing the worn screen. We screen porches and lanais throughout Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Volusia counties.

The problem we see most

Open porches allow insects and windblown debris into a space that could otherwise be used more often.

How we fix it

We measure the openings, discuss the screen and access points, then provide a written estimate for the work.

How the job runs

  1. 1Measure the porch or lanai
  2. 2Review the layout and estimate
